Bullet trains enter the history books

Amazing, isn’t it? Hats off to these guys!!

Many of us know that the Chinese Porcelain industry was known for its SUPERLATIVE QUALITY way back in 6th century. They were also leaders in silk and had invented paper and printing materials, which are still very pronounced in Dalian and a few other parts of the ‘Middle Kingdom’.

This made me think how come today China is perceived as a 'Low Quality" place. The core reason is none other than China's business positioning created by the country itself. The poor quality has been a mission statement to make China the world's workshop and give livelihood to millions. They could not opt for differentiating strategy as volume was more crucial for survival. So far as quality is concerned, we can all see it in the picture below....

Premier Wen Jiabao (right) shakes hands with Li Dongxiao, the driver of the first commercial bullet train from Beijing on the Shanghai- Beijing high-speed railway yesterday. Wen joined other passengers on board the train in Beijing, calling the service a new chapter in China's railway history. Wen said the 1,318-kilometer link was of great significance to the country's transport system and would promote economic and social development while satisfying people's need for swift movement. Wen urged the rail operator to ensure the service remained safe and continue to raise standards. The new service cuts travel between the two cities to under five hours. Present flying time between Shanghai and Beijing is around 2 hours.

Anyone who wants to make China a role model for Bharat needs to read Swami Vivekananda. And read not with the intent to insert the Swami's quotations in a political speech. But read with the intent to learn, to illuminate the intellect. To understand what unity, divinity and purity is all about.

BJP Becoming A 'Gated Community'

The BJP is just giving 'reactions' to scams and follies of the government and has no original stand. It is a party that seems incapable of taking a pan-India political initiative to impress young voters. For many BJP leaders, political activism is all about screaming on television.

Nationalist party active in dividing people? It is possible only because of the timidity that has descended on nationalist forces. We need those who think like Swami Vivekananda, not mere quotations.

Meghnad Desai in Indian Express

But Vivekananda is one of those figures of early modern India whom the secularists accept as much as the fans of Hindutva do. That is probably because neither of the camps read him. Yet, he is central to the story of modern India. Vivekananda is most interesting not when he is expounding the Gita, but when he is examining modern Indian society. Thus, he wrote to an Indian friend in 1894, ‘...Religion has no business to formulate social laws and insist on the difference between beings....’ Then again, ‘Social laws were created by economic conditions under the sanction of religion. The terrible mistake of religion was to interfere in social matters.’
