Why should I apologize? - Narendra Modi

Narendra Modi's exclusive interview to Urdu daily, Nai Duniya || Why should I apologize? - Narendra Modi

by Narendra Modi For PM on Thursday, July 26, 2012 at 11:14am ·
Shahid Siddiqui, editor of the Urdu-language weekly newspaper Nai Duniya, recently spoke to Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi in a rare interview. During the hour long conversation, Mr. Modi defended his actions during the 2002 riots in his state that left hundreds dead, discussed the long court battles that followed and asked why Gujarat is being “targeted” by critics.

Mr. Modi is considered one of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s strongest candidates for prime minister in the upcoming 2014 elections, but the legacy of the Gujarat riots has also made him one of India’s most controversial and divisive politicians. Mr. Siddiqui, a former member of Parliament from Uttar Pradesh, supplied an audio file of the interview to India Ink. The interview was translated from Urdu and excerpted by Raksha Kumar.

Q. There are a lot of questions on the riots for the past 20 years. Those who were burnt in the train in Godhra, their bodies were brought back to Ahmedabad. Why did you decide to do this? Did you not understand the repercussions of this?
  • I have answered this question in detail to the SIT [Special Investigation Team] and the Supreme Court. No matter whose body it is, it needs to be returned to the families, right? It was not right for everyone to go to Godhra where there was tension. The second thing is that this train was going to Ahmedabad, and the passengers were all going to Ahmebadad. So how do you get the bodies to reach their families?

Q. You could have silently brought it to the hospitals and handed them over.
  • That is exactly how it happened. (laughs)

Q. Didn’t you take them out on a procession?
  • No. Listen to the truth. There is no place in Godhra to keep so many bodies, it is an administrative decision as to how to manage these? Now, all the bodies had to go to north [Ahmedabad], so the question was do we shift it individually or as a huge lot? Do we shift it in the morning or at night? The administration felt that we should shift it at night to reduce tension. The civil hospital in Ahmedabad is congested. And in 2001, it was in the outskirts. So, 16 bodies were brought into the civil hospital. There was no procession.
Q. When the riots broke out, you would have gotten the information that people are dying? What did you do to stop it?
  • We announced a curfew, appealed to people to be peaceful. My first appeal was to Godhra, to let the police do their duty. The entire police force was asked to get on this job. There had never been a riot this big in India before, and the first riot in the age of 24X7 media. Earlier the government had the time to organize its machinery as the news broke out only in the following day’s newspapers. There will surely be a difference in the speed of the television and police movement! Forces had to compete with the speed of TV news.
  • Let me tell you what happened in the first 72 hours:
  • There hasn’t been even one police gun shot, no lathi charge. There was lathi charge where Indira Gandhi’s dead body was kept. They did it there to control the crowds. But, here people were arrested in advance.
Q. But your officials, police and some in the media reported you having told the people to vent out their anger in the first 48 hours? Even Haren Pandya [the late home minister of the state] had said that.
  • The Supreme Court asked for an investigation to be conducted. We should trust that.
Q. Did you tell the police to stop the rioting at any cost?
  • Of course! There are shoot at sight orders I gave the police. That is public.
Q. Even at that time I had heard that people were identified and burnt, as though the whole thing was pre-planned.
  • It is all a lie. Instead, think about how many Muslims were protected then! If they were to be killed systematically, who would have been spared today?
Q. But they say you were in the control room.
  • The SC [Supreme Court] team has investigated this. Wait until their report is submitted.
Q. Did you go to the refugee camps yourself?
  • I went everywhere and investigated. There used to be PILs [public interest litigation] in the Gujarat High Court very often those days. And some judgements say that the best facilities were provided to the refugees.
Q. What did the PM say to you at that point?
  • There is a video(link) on that. Atalji [Atal Bihari Vajpayee] said that he has trust in me.
Q. Senior Congress leaders including Rajiv Gandhi apologized after 1984 [communal riots]. And [Jagdish] Tytler was made to quit politics. You haven’t regretted your actions or apologized until now. It has been 10 years. You should have done it as a head of state.
  • You should see the statements I made at that point. From that you will understand what Modi thinks and believes. There was a 2005 interview of mine with Prabhu Chawla. He asked me the same question and I told him, why should I apologize? If a government is responsible for this, then it should be hanged in the middle of the road. And they should be hanged as a deterrent – so that no administrator dares to do this again. They should not be forgiven, because that is encouraging the crime. If Modi has sinned, then Modi should be hanged. But, even after trying sincerely to save many lives, some people want to badmouth me due to political reasons, then I cant answer them.
Q. Is there some sorrow in your heart about what happened? That you couldn’t stop it?
  • First, I think I managed to stop the rioting. I will not admit that I couldn’t.
Q. If a correspondent of mine gives me wrong information and I print it, then I, as an editor, will apologize. There will be a case against me, not him.
  • I will give you all the documents with my statements. And if you are convinced that I was not involved in it, then you should also publish that you were harsh on me. Then you should say that for the past 10 years we have defamed Modi and you should apologize to me.
Q. Even after the riots, your administration was not willing to deliver justice until the Supreme Court intervened. There was no SIT, the accused were all acquitted.
  • You are mistaken. The SIT deals with only 8-9 cases, here there have been thousands of FIRs [First Information Report] and arrests. Not one person was punished in 1984 riots. Justice has been delivered in more than 50 cases in my state. Only Best Bakery and Bilkis Bano cases have been moved to other states.
Q. Why were there so many fake encounters in your admin?
  • Let me tell you what is happening in the state where you are an MP [Member of Parliament] from – Uttar Pradesh.
  • Mayawati had said she made 396 encounters to maintain normalcy. In my state there were just 12 encounters.
  • The national human rights commission has said that in the last 10 years (in this country) 400 have been fake. There is an appeal in the supreme court that these should be re-investigated. So, it is a national issue, why is Gujarat being targeted. If you want to talk about Gujarat, talk about UP , talk about the rest of the country.

A pilgrimage to Chandrapur

A pilgrimage to Chandrapur.
Chandrapur is a relatively smaller town near Nagpur, with a great history of excelling in the field of education and culture. Three RSS Sarsanghchalaks had an opportunity to study here including Param Pujya Shri Guruji (M.S.Golwalkar), Shri K.S.Sudarshan ji and Shri Mohan Rao Bhagwat ji. The city takes inspirations from Lokmanya Tilak and Dr Ambedkar . In 1935 New Model School was established to provide best of education to the city 's growing number of students on the ideals of Lokmanya Tilak and in 1955 it was renamed after the great Swarajya Leader Tilak as Lokmanya Tilak Vidyalaya. Not only Shri Mohan Rao ji Bhagwat studied here, it has the honour of having many distinguished scientists and social activists like Dr Rani Bang, Dr Sudhakar Agarkar, Shri Shailesh Deshmukh and the present Memebr of Parliament, Loksabha Shri Hansraj Ahir as its alumni. Gadhchiroli, the dense forest area with a mojority of tribal population falls in this district, which is more known for the Maoist activities. As also the inspiring 'pilgrim centres ' of social work of Baba Amte and the  dedicated couple -Shri and Smt Bang. Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram, Rashtra Sewika Samiti and Sewa Bharati runs several tribal development projects, like schools, medical help centres and hostels in this region. The region is also known for coal mines and one of the biggest thermal power station in Asia.

This year Lokmanya Tilak School invited me to deliver their annual Lokmanya Tilak Memorial Lecture on 23rd July , the birth day of Lokmanya.  Here are some pictures of the well attended programme, inspite of heavy rains.

Bal Apte: The man who built a generation Vivekananda aspired for

Tarun Vijay
July 23, 2012 14:59 IST
Bal Apte's life was his message, writes Tarun Vijay paying tribute to the RSS stalwart who passed into the ages last week
In the late 'sixties, the chief examiner for Mumbai [ Images ] University's final year law exam had a young friend appearing for it. The student and the professor knew each other well. Yet, neither did the examiner ask him for the roll number, nor did the student give a hint about it. After the exams were over, both met and had a hearty laugh, saying everything without uttering a single word.
The examiner was Bal Apte, who would help build the largest student force in India [ Images ] that gained world fame, and the student was Madan Das, who went on to become a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh stalwart.
This is how the ideologue worked, incessantly building the character of youth by his own example and powering organisations dedicated to the nationalist school of thought.
Bal Apte, a brilliant Supreme Court lawyer lived the life of an ascetic devoting all his time and resources for the organisation. He was the person Dr Hedgewar; founder of the RSS, would need to create a formidable, highly motivated force of workers with unflinching faith in the ideology.
Ideology gives you strength to face challenges and mitigate the fear of hurdles, he would say. A tough, hard taskmaster, he had the heart of a mother. Known and often feared as an unyielding disciplinarian, he was guardian angel to thousands of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad workers who regarded him as a friend, philosopher and guide.
When the Left- and Congress-run bodies ruled the campuses and saffron was invisible from the areas dominated by fashionable elements mocking at the patriotic shades of activism, Yashwant Rao Kelkar envisioned a student force that would speak and work for India, which was later taken over by Bal Apte as its president. Soon the ABVP spread its wings all over India, challenging ideological opponents and having its members often murdered by Left extremists in Kerala [ Images ], Andhra Pradesh and elsewhere.
But the power of ideology engined its march ahead and it became an organisation that devoted itself not only to nurture academic excellence through conducting book-banks, students' vacation employment bureau, first class first felicitation functions, inter-collegiate and inter-university music competitions, painting competitions, literary competitions, student-writers' meets, sports meets, social participation camps, personality development camps, technical, medical, management, agri students workshops, technical exhibitions, Indo-foreign students' bureau, study circles and art circles, students' experience in inter-state living, my home is India, students for development etc, but also created hugely successful movements opposing Bangladeshi infiltration, Kashmir's [ Images ] secessionists, Maoist violence and de-Indianisation of the education system.
Bal Apte was responsible for creating an atmosphere of creativity and a strong allegiance to organisational ideology, putting up the ideals of Swami Vivekananda. One of the finest projects of the ABVP, My Home is India, invites students from the north-east to live with families in Mumbai and elsewhere for enriching them with an affectionate and caring India experience. At least two chief ministers of Arunachal Pradseh have grown up with this experience.
Later, in 1985, the ABVP launched the World Organisation of Students and Youth. It is the first international youth body with India as headquarters. The organisation works to bring together students and youth from various countries to promote peace and welfare of humanity.
Apte also served as additional advocate general for the state of Maharashtra [ Images ] from 1996 to 1998. As hon. professor, he taught law at the University of Bombay for 12 years. He wrote many celebrated books, but the one analysing the Supreme Court verdict on Hindutva became more famous.
His life was his message. For 38 years, the best part of his youth, he worked to build the ABVP as a formidable students force. His wife, Nirmala, works with Stree Shakti, a project for awakening on women's issues, and his only daughter, Dr Jahanavi, worked as full time worker for the ABVP. One of his closest associates, Prof Raj Kumar Bhatia, describes him as a sage-politician who would never compromise on principles .
He was my guide and conscience-keeper as president of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation. For the first time, through this foundation, several rare works of Dr Mookerjee were re-searched and published and a research project initiated to collect his parliamentary speeches. When we proposed to hold the martyrdom day of Dr Mookerjee in Srinagar [ Images ], another first, almost everyone discouraged us. They said, 'Have a programme in the name of any other person, but not Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, that too under a government led by the grandson of Sheikh Abdullah'. And history tells us too, that never before was any programme dedicated to Dr Mookerjee held there. Bal Apte heard us and decided, 'We will have it there only'. And it was a roaring success.
Such was his strength of conviction that after his moving, inspiring speech, the entire audience, numbering approximately 400, and almost everyone a Kashmiri Muslim, stood up and sang the national anthem.
He could have easily got a third term in the Rajya Sabha, but he refused saying, 'I will use my experience in other fields as the RSS decides'. The day his Rajya Sabha term expired, he packed up and left for Mumbai, after vacating his house.
There were several instances when he was approached by 'pragmatic' persons wanting his Member of Parliament Local Area Development fund for 'mutually beneficial' schemes, assuring a certain percentage from the funds to him. Such people had to face his wrath in such a way that they would never dare to approach him again.
He was not happy with the present political scenario and often felt disgusted and, above all, compromises on core issues saddened him. And he often spoke strongly on such degradation, becoming a human mirror to all. His commitment to ideology was complete and he would never allow the slightest deviation from the basic approach towards various national and international issues.
There are people who are known for their wealth and others for their academic achievements. But Bal Apte was a man who would be known by the workers he created for the organisation. Seeing the commitment and the excellent track record of the organisational cadre alone, one can value the contributions of the publicity shy Balasaheb.

PRESS NOTE
BJP welcomes Supreme Court taking cognizance of Amarnath Yatris -
J&K Government's apathy to Amarnath Yatris condemnable.
Statement of Shri Tarun Vijay Member of Parliament and
National spokesperson, BJP
16th July, 2012 - New Delhi.  We welcome Supreme Court taking suo moto cognizance of reports regarding the deaths of Amarnath Yatra Pilgrims and issuing notices to the Union Home Ministry, Health Ministry, J&K Government and Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) regarding the extra ordinary high number of pilgrims' deaths this year and lack of basic facilities for yatris.

The apathy and insensitive attitude of J&K Government and SASB headed by Governor Shri Vohra is quite evident.  They have chosen to not to see the plight of the Hindu Pilgrims and not give any hearens to the appeals of the hapless pilgrims who are braving natural and state - made difficulties on the route to Amarnath shrine.  The harrowing tales of the pilgrims describing lack of facilities and chaotic situation prevailing on the route to Shri Amarnathji are raising doubts whether J&K Government is interested in having this pilgrimage continued.  One of the oldest and highest revered pilgrimages for the Hindus globally is facing insensitive and callous attitude by those who were responsible to help it occur smoothly.  The silence of Union Home ministry is in this regard is also in deafening.  We demand Shri Chidambaram should immediately go  to Srinagar to hold a review meeting with CM and Governor regarding facilities for the yatris and take immediate decisions to provide adequate health and shelter facilities to the yatris.

The stony silence of J&K Government on why it has failed to build permanent shelters for the Amarnath yatris as it had promised to the people during famous Amarnath agitation in 2008 also needs to be explained by Union Government. Are Hindus who had already been forced - exile from the valley, now being tortured to abandon their pilgrimage to Amarnath also?

SHIVA'S COSMIC DANCE AT CERN

SHIVA'S COSMIC DANCE AT CERN
By GP.Srinivasan

The statue of Nataraja, the Cosmic Dancer, Dr. Aymar, DG of CERN, Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary to the Government of India

(CERN: European Center for Nuclear Research)
"The Wave Structure of Matter Explains the Atomic Structure of Matter. The 'Particle' as the Wave-Center of a Spherical Standing Wave in Space" explains the cosmic dance of Nataraja."
"Modern physics has shown that the rhythm of creation and destruction is not only manifest in the turn of the seasons and in the birth and death of all living creatures, but is also the very essence of inorganic matter," and that "For
the modern physicists, then, Shiva's dance is the dance of subatomic matter."
-Fritjof Capra in “The Tao of Physics”, 1975
Shiva's Cosmic Dance at CERN: On June 18, 2004, an unusual new landmark was unveiled at CERN, the European Center for Research in Particle Physics in Geneva -- a 2m tall statue of the Indian deity Shiva Nataraja- the Lord of Dance. The statue, symbolizing Shiva's cosmic dance of creation and destruction, was given to CERN by the Indian government to celebrate the research center's long association with India.
In choosing the image of Shiva Nataraja, the Indian government acknowledged the profound significance of the metaphor of Shiva's dance for the cosmic dance of subatomic particles, which is observed and analyzed by CERN's physicists. The parallel between Shiva's dance and thedance of subatomic particles was first discussed by Fritjof Capra in an article titled "The Dance of Shiva: The Hindu
View of Matter in the Light of Modern Physics," published in Main Currents in Modern Thought in 1972. Shiva's cosmic dance then became a central metaphor in Capra's international bestseller The Tao of Physics, first published in 1975 and still in print with over 40 editions and still going strong..
A special plaque next to the Shiva statue at CERN explains the significance of the metaphor of Shiva's cosmic dance with several quotations from The Tao of Physics. Here is the text of the plaque:
Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy, seeing beyond the unsurpassed rhythm, beauty, power and grace of the Nataraja, once wrote of it "It is the clearest image of the activity of God which any art or religion can boast of."
More recently, Fritjof Capra explained that "Modern physics has shown that the rhythm of creation and destruction is not only manifest in the turn of the seasons and in the birth and death of all living creatures, but is also the very essence of inorganic matter," and "for the modern physicists, then, Shiva's dance is the dance of subatomic matter."
It is indeed as Capra concluded: "Hundreds of years ago, Indian artists created visual images of dancing Shiva's in a beautiful series of bronzes. In our time, physicists have used the most advanced technology to portray the patterns of the cosmic dance. The metaphor of the cosmic dance thus unifies ancient mythology, religious art and modern physics."
Fritjof Capra explained that "Modern physics has shown that the rhythm of creation and destruction is not only manifest in the turn of the seasons and in the birth and death of all living creatures, but is also the very essence of inorganic matter," and that "For the modern physicists, then, Shiva's dance is the dance of subatomic matter."
I bought a copy of "Tao of Physics" written by Fritjof Capra which I purchased when I was about 18 years old in 1976.This was an expensive book at that time by any standard and for a student to get a copy in those days was difficult thing.. Buying it was one thing, and to see Yoga and Hindu Philosophy getting a Scientific Interpretation, in leading research laboratories, in the west made it even more attractive. It was a thrilling experience to practice yoga, and to compare Yoga Philosophy with Physics with my friend Anton was challenging. We discussed about mind and matter and Yoga. To this day this Tao of Physics remains one of best books of its kind. Of course there were other books written by authors of "Dancing Wei Lui Masters", and "Zen and the Art of Motor Cycle Repair" etc.
In his Introduction Capra had narrated his experience while gazing at the Pacific Ocean. His entire field of vision disappeared and replaced by Cosmic Consciousness, which he could identify and was later able to relate to Advaitha of Hindu Philosophy of gaining cosmic vision. The book carried on the Cover a Dancing Nataraja's photo, which became a international hit. The particles of subatomic matter moving in a gas chamber, and a photograph tracing their movements superimposed on the image of Nataraja’s became the most celebrated photo.(1)
For the first time this made history for the philosophy of yoga and principles of quantum physics were merged into seamless realism.
"The Eastern mystics see the universe as an inseparable web, whose interconnections are dynamic and not static. The cosmic web is alive; it moves and grows and changes continually. Modern physics, too, has come to conceive of the universe as such a web of relations and, like Eastern mysticism, has recognized that this web is intrinsically dynamic. The dynamic aspect of matter arises in quantum theory as a consequence of the wave-nature of subatomic particles, and is even more essential in relativity theory, where the unification of space and time implies that the being of matter cannot be separated from its activity. The properties of subatomic particles can therefore only be understood in a dynamic context; in terms of movement, interaction and transformation. "Fritjof Capra " The Tao of Physics".
Though his ideas were revolutionary. I never thought that nearly 30 years down the line I would be writing about him for a paper what I have learnt about him To understand the Hindu Concept of Cosmic Nataraja we have to understand the Hindu Concept of dance itself. When it comes to natya the greatest inimitable exponent, Balasaraswathy had stated that Bharatnatyam is nothing but "Natya yoga". Bharat Natya originated with Tapas and Nataraja himself is the supreme teacher of Natya and codified by Bharatha Muni in his Natya Sastra. Bharat Natya is the Supreme cultural Symbol of Perfection in dance form. When the most revered cultural symbol of Sikhs was threatened as happened some months ago when the blue attire of their most revered Guru Govind Singh was copied by Dera Sacha Sauda founder Baba Ram Rahim, the entire sikh community of Punjab and Haryana were outraged . They came to streets, and the two states came to a stand still. it was a war like situation. This incident was an eye-opener, as to what the consequences will be if religious sacred religious symbols and traditions of one section of the population are misappropriated illegitimately. I had sent this article to some friends for their comments:
Prof Chakrapani from Maryland, USA, "I am back in India.... The article on "Quantum physics and the dance of Nataraja" and the Shiva on CERN was a classic article. Many of us had been to CERN you have exposed our ignorance and indifference also by that article. Imagine if Jesus on Cross-had been depicted in the reception of CERN, how much the Christian Missionaries would take advantage of it? He quipped why Hindus are blind to their own culture & Heritage?
Whenever we hear the name 'Golden Temple', we tend to think of the beautiful Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. There is another Golden Temple in South India - the great Nataraja temple at Chidambaram in Tamilnadu that is associated with the cosmic dance of Nataraja. These are sacred cultural and religious symbols of Bharat and of great importance and immense sacrifices have been made both Sikhs and Hindus respectively to save and protect their holy symbols and
sacred places.
Definition Bharata Natyam (Noun): A Dance form from Southern India, usually performed by one Dancer, and based on Hindu mythology, in which the movements of the hands and arms have an elaborate and stylized meanings. Sanskrit Bharatanatya, Dance of Bharatha, reputed author of a famous manual of drama and dance. (Encarta dictionary)
What Nataraja Symbolizes? "Nataraja" is a manifestation of Shiva, assumed the Lord of Dance (Bharatanatyam) . The Koil (temple) of Saivaites and the Head quarters of dancers is the famous temple with the presence of Nataraja is in Chidambaram Tamilnadu, India, where the lord himself danced at the golden hall on the request of the sages Vyagrapaada and Pataanjali. (Incidentally whose Samadhis have been located in Thirupattur and renovated by my friend lawyer Chandramouli) .
What Nataraja signifies? His body represents the sky. His hands entreat the eight directions. His three eyes symbolise the sun, moon and the eight directions. His smile acts as the distraction of evil. His hair embodies wisdom. His crescent moon shows enlightenment. His sacred thread indicates philosophy. His garments are the Vedas. His damaru is the creation of sound. His Abhayam (blessing hand literally without fear) Signifies protection. His varada is for liberation. His tiger skin acts to control anger. His anklets direct to a good path. His serpent controls jealousy. The deer signifies compassion. The body of dwarf apasmara-purusha (the man of forgetfulness) who embodies indifference, ignorance and sloth.
Dance in India is a form of Spiritual practice, with strict austerities such as fasting, and meditation on Shiva and above all Guru Bhakthi, which is still widely prevalent. Shiva is the Supreme Yogi of the Gods, is the Lord of the dance. Here Dancing is not seen as an art in the western sense for one's own enjoyment and pleasure, but the Dancer seeks to create oneness with the Lord of the Universe. The same thought to evoke the oneness with the Cosmos as Fritjof Capra Capra when he said in introduction to Tao of Physics. "He (Nataraja) brought out the parallels in our understanding of the Universe as a dynamic interconnected unity". The word Brahman is derived from the Sanskrit root brih - to grow- and thus suggests a reality, which is dynamic and alive. The Upanishads refer to Brahman as 'this unformed, immortal, moving', thus associating it with motion even though it transcends all forms.
The Rig Veda uses another term to express the dynamic character of the universe, the term Rita. This word comes from the root ri - to move. In its phenomenal aspect, the cosmic One is thus intrinsically dynamic, and the apprehension of its dynamic nature is basic to all schools of Eastern mysticism. They all emphasize that the universe has to be grasped dynamically, as it moves, vibrates and dances. Hence Fritjof Capra, on the cover of his book had reproduced the photomontage of dancing Nataraja super imposed on subatomic particles photographed in a chamber. (In the present day editions this has been replaced with a Yin and Yang symbol)
"Fritjof Capra is correct that matter can not be separated from motion; the error of modern physics has been in the conception of Motion as the motion of Matter ('subatomic particles') rather than the wave motion of Space. Western Physics (with its 'particles' and 'forces / fields' in 'Space Time') has never correctly understood the Eastern worldview. It is also important to understand that the ancient Indian philosophers did actually know how the universe was a dynamic unity, what matter was, how the One Thing / Brahman caused and connected the many things. Thus Eastern philosophical knowledge is ultimately founded on mysticism and intuition. Recent discoveries on the properties of Space and the Wave Structure of Matter (Wolff, Haselhurst) confirm that we can understand Reality and the interconnection of all things from a logical/scientific foundation."

God particle: ‘India is like a historic father of the project
KOLKATA/GENEVA: The discovery of a new sub-atomic particle that is crucial to understanding how the universe is built announced in Geneva today has an intrinsic Indian connection.

A large number of Indian scientists, representing the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP), Kolkata, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, Harishchandra Research Institute, Allahabad and Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, were involved in the world's most ambitious experiment over the years.

The Indian link to the world's ambitious experiment was also significantly reflected in comments ahead of the announcement by CERN scientists that a sub-atomic particle "consistent" with the Higgs boson or 'God particle' has been spotted.

"India is like a historic father of the project," said Paolo Giubellino, spokesperson of Geneva-based European Organisation for Nuclear Research, famously known as CERN.

As scientists thrashed out the 'God particle' in its physical form in a giant collider, there was palpable excitement at SINP since its scientists had made significant contributions to the development of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiments at CERN.

The long-sought particle, known as Higgs boson, is also partly named after an Indian scientist Satyendra Nath Bose, who worked with Albert Einstein in the 1920s and made discoveries that led to the most coveted prize in particle physics.

Stating that it was a historical moment in physics and SINP took pride in being a part of the history, the Institute irector Milan Sanyal said "It will require more data and intense scrutiny to establish these findings beyond any doubt.

"This is an important moment for the development of science and I am very happy that our institute, this city and our country is part of the science revolution," he told PTI in Kolkata.

He said that the core CMS team of the SINP had five faculty members - group leader Prof Sunanda Banerjee, Prof Satyaki Bhattacharya, Prof Suchandra Datta, Prof Subir Sarkar and Prof Manoj Saran.

The phrase " God particle" was coined by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon Lederman but is used by laymen, not physicists, as an easier way of explaining how the subatomic universe works and got started.

Meanwhile, Cosmologist Archan Majumder, who is attached with the S N Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, today termed the spotting of the sub-atomic particle "consistent" with the 'God Particle' as a victory for human civilization.

"The discovery is revolutionary in human history. This is a great victory of the fundamental knowledge of human civilization," Majumder told here.

The 'God Particle' of Higgs Boson is regarded as key to understanding the formation of the universe.

"There has been a strong indication of finding the much-awaited new subatomic particle which, though requiring more and more experiments for confirmation in coming years, will go a long way in unravelling the mystery of the evolution of the universe," he said.

Besides scientists from the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, those from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, Harishchandra Research Institute, Allahabad and Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, were involved in the CERN experiment over the years, he said.

Pune BJP spokesperson and Member of Parliament Tarun Vijay on Friday criticised the UPA for its presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee. “Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have failed to revive the economy,” Vijay said on Friday while addressing the media in the city.
“The Indian economy is in a bad shape. The stimulus package has failed to inspire markets and trade. It is a leaderless economy and the person who made it leaderless is the presidential candidate,” he said, adding that the BJP would stick to “dignified” campaign during presidential elections.
Speaking on the Kashmir issue, he came down heavily on the interlocutors’ report on Jammu and Kashmir and said that it was prepared in “Hurriyat conference”. “It seems the report is readied to please Islamabad,’’ said Vijay and demaned that the report be rejected.
He said the government was pushing a separatist agenda through the report. The interlocutors were sent to Kashmir to find a solution to the problem, and the trip was made at the expense of taxpayers money, he added. “They are, however, negating government officials stand on Kashmir and reducing the influence of tricolour in the valley,’’ said Vijay.
He said instead of using the term ‘Pak occupied Kashmir’, the report calls it ‘Pak administered Kashmir’. “Whose tunes are these people dancing to? The report is against the 1994 resolution by the Parliament, which states that the only issue to be resolved about Kashmir is to take back illegal portions occupied by Pakistan and China,’’ he said. He said the report place any importance to the issue of returning ‘Hindus to Kashmir.
Vijay along with BJP city unit chief Vikas Mathkari, also called on Manju Mukharjee, grand daughter of Jan Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, at her residence in Koregaon Park.
