There exists a strong connection with Swami Vivekananda and Dehradun. An ancient Shiva temple, situated at Rajpur, appears in Swamiji’s biography, where he had stayed for 13 days in October 1890, while on his way to Tehri and Badrinath. In this Shiva temple a Guru Bhai of Swami Vivekananda, Swami Turiyananda was convalescing. When Vivekanada got to know about him he immediately came here and stayed in a small hut, at the foothills near a natural water source, bawadi.
Still the Shiva temple is known as bawadi Shiva Mandir.
Shri Tarun Vijay, Rajya Sabha MP and National Spokesperson, BJP visited the place on 12th January 2011 and paid homage to the memory of the great reformer. He lamented at the dilapidated status of the historic kuti and announced that he will spend from his MP Laid fund to have the area renovated and the path leading to the temple and Vivekananda Kuti properly constructed. He appealed to the state govt , specially culture and tourism depts. to look into this matter and declare the place a State Heritage site. He also appealed that the funds - 11 lakhs, for the statue of Swami Vivekananda, to be installed at the T junction at Kishanpur, Malsi point, be released immediately and the files cleared for the installation on Shiva Ratri day, March 8th, 2011.
Mr Tarun Vijay informed that the sites related with the memory of swami Vivekananda in Uttarakhand should be declared as Inspirational tourism place s and a special Vivekananda Trail ( Vivekananda Smriti Path)be projected for the youth of India to visit those places including Almora, ( Kakrighat, karbala etc)
. He said that still in the house of Late Badrilal Shah, many memories of Swami ji are kept safe including his originals written from Colombo. Tarun Vijay lauded the efforts of Ramakrishna Ashram, Kishan Pur and its energetic President Maharaj and also the indefatigable efforts of Mrs Shuchismita Sengupta Pande, Secy, Information Commission in presenting many unknown facts about swami Vivekananda’s Uttarakhand connection.

Swami Vivekanand is the greatest symbol of Indian culture. India can be a great country if he follow his ideology.
There is no doubt that Swami Vivekananda is one of the greatest symbols of Indian social and spiritual heritage. What India needs is the fire of Vivekananda to ignite the country. Only the young in millions could make it possible and for that we need a leader of His stature and more.
Swami ji stopped at Dehradoon only for a few hours (not 13 days) and he pertook a few jackfruit bulbs. The jackfruit tree stills stands tall at the Ashram Premises. He also visited his Gurubhai Swami Turiananda in his Sadhana Kutir at Vawadi Shiv Mandir. The place I visited yesterday.
