ABVP celebrates Navratra in JNU

A history of sorts was created at the JNU campus when Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad held a unique discussion on the first day of Navratra on the 19th September 2009 at Periyar hall in the JNU. The chief speaker was noted thinker and renowned journalist Shri Tarun Vijay who mesmerized the students with his invigorating speech on the cultural nationalism and the Dharma of student community in the task of national rejuvenation.

In a public meet of full house organized by ABVP (JNU unit), on a very auspicious occasion of the first day of ‘Navaratra’ Sri Tarun Vijay made the students of the university feel the fiery spark of Nationalism, establishing that every country has its own characteristics and civilisational moors. Along which it develops and prospers and for India it is non-other than the ‘cultural nationalism’.

In his over an hour long speech, he touched upon a number of references to bring out multilateral vigorous dimensions of Indian Nationalism. Quoting Sri Auribindo he said that ‘nationality of India lies in Sanatan Dharma’. India is not simply a conglomeration or compilation of rocks, rivers, buildings or roads but it is live Bhawani Bharati, Maa Durga, hence unlike other nations who call their birth-land as fatherland we relate ourselves with Bharat Bhumi as her children and proudly call it as Motherland.

He said that nationalism for us is not merely a political programme; contrarily it is a way of life, a Dharma for us, that has come from Vedic rishis. Nationalism is a creed, which we shall have to live. Bharat that is India remains our supreme God and we must live to justify our belonging to her.

He said that due to colonial mindset and hangover, historians have adopted the ill habit of maligning our own glorious history. The most notorious amongst such Indian heritage haters are the communists who have distorted the glorious past of the nation to suit their mentors abroad and prove their extra territorial loyalties. He said we celebrate Vijayadashmi because Ram had returned to Ayodhya after annihilation of the unrepentant wicked forces represented by Dashanan Ravan. He is not worshipped because he made a compromise with the evil. His stature id highest in our heart and soul because he never compromised even at the cost of a 14 years long Vanavas-exile and he organized peoples’ Shakti to end the cruel rule of the barbarians. The significance of ‘returning to Ayodhya’ leaving behind the attractions of the Golden and prosperous Lanka is to be understood in today’s circumstances when the lure of the lucre is deviating people from the hard path of ideological commitment.

He said that like Rama’s return to Ayodhya, all Indians will have to return to their Chiti, meaning the core values of Sanatan Dharma which ha s a universal mnessage of peace, mutual coexistence and a respect for the nature.

Through spiritually inspired nationalism and divinity of motherland we develop a close and affectionate relationship with nature. We are a civilization, which has never been an exploiter of nature. Our holy land Bharat whose religion is Bharatiyata has three pillars ‘Karuna, means compassion, Maitri means harmonious relationship, and kshama’, means being good to all except the wicked.While the Western culture is based on brutal state power and intolerance for the different view point. He exemplified it with, citing post Columbus massacres in America.

Explaining the basic principles of ‘Integral Humanism’ the core philosophy given by Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay, he said that all atrocities, sorrows and miseries that we face today is because we have alienated ourselves from social concerns and turned individualistic entities, which is a complete reversal of our philosophy of life, which is largely based on collective and communitarian mode of life.

Questioning the moral and ideological stand of communists, he said that their belief system has been of based on intolerance, resulting in inhuman killings,and unprecedented massacres from the regime of Stalin to Mao and Pol Pot. Their history has been a pathetic story of inhuman, barbaric actions in Russia, China, Cambodia and Vietnam. How can they justify the brutal killings of common poor people, teachers and young mothers in the name of any ‘dictatorship of the proletariat’ or any kind of so called ideology of socialism. They have never been loyal to this great Indian nation. Over two hundred fifty of senior communist leaders were were charged with sedition and jailed in the aftermath of 1962’ war with China when China had attacked us while on the other hand RSS swyamsevaks were invited by the Pt. Nehru’s government to join the republic day parade in full RSS uniform as recognition of their patriotic services to the motherland. That’s the difference we must understand.

We are also the sons of Gurugovind Singh, Jhalkari Bai , Lakshami Bai and Shivaji, whose blood runs through our arteries and muscles of our arms and at any cost we can’t let our Nation look down from any foreign ideological invasion.Be a proud Indian citizen, going beyond the differences of religion, caste or creed and let the Bhagwa flutter over the defeat of the red terrorists.

The hall reverberated with the slogans of Vande Mataram and Bharat mata ki Jai and it was an unprecedented celebration of Indian values after a long time in JNU.

Shri Praveen garg, reader in Shradhananda College and President of Delhi state ABVP presided over the meeting. He said in his presidential address about how the ABVP took roots in the JNU and it’s the hard work and ideological commitment of the workers that has shown us the continous strenghthening to he unit in this campus.

Shri Rajesh Ranjan, President of the JNU unit of ABVP welcomed the students. After the programme all the students went to offer puja at the Durga Pandal, established in the campus after a long drawn battle with the so-called secularists.

A tribute to 14th September ( Balidan Divas )

Sunny yet a bit dry morning , cold wind blowing from nearby garden and my vyeth in front of my house at Banamohalla was flowing very quietly that day. Nothing more and Nothing Less , the day started for me as a usual day. Being in 7th grade and excited about the adolescent age at my doors , it was an exciting time.

I was riping over tunes of Qayamat seh Qayamet tak.. and feeling every stroke of heart beat at this raw Adolescent. Watching some good faces around and a good team of football at school was craze. To Share this craze among friends was an honour not bestowed on many. I had returned from two good trips recently and it was for the first time that I officially stayed away from family for a fortnight.

Plundering it may sound but I was spreading hot news across in school premises and attaching every significance of my journey like a seaman returning after discovery of Americas Inc. Fortunes wont have changed if life would have stayed bit like the same and god wouldn't have be displeased further if I would have taken my life further from here. Things were occasionally forecasting the shadows to be played even at zenith but I loved my horizons and sunsets more than them.

In premises of Purshayar temple , stood our two story building called GITA BHAWAN. For last 3 years or so , I was pursuing myself in rehearsing every shalok of Bhagwat Gita and some other religious text. Our Teacher Sanjay ji , Kamlesh ji and few more were so dedicated that at times , I would feel the positive energies from them transcending through me into the body and heart.

Between during the ill fated elections of 86 and fresh from violence in Anantnag , I heard the trauma stories of my fellow brethren who coincided to my belief that everything wasn't right. By Mid 1989 signals were fearsome for this kid.

One fine day, I was playing with my friends next to mansabal lake Higher secondary school. Every Muslim boy would couter brand himself as Miandad and would love to hit six on last ball fo match. Natraj Pencils advertisement was branded as " Yeh hai Match ki akhri genddh and yeh lagah chakkah, Pakistan fir champion". With a friendly laugh , I would dismiss this skirmish as another foolish paradize. Suddenly I realized a cricket club which came from Asham ( A village not far from Safapore ) teasing me as Dyali batta ... I had a HRM HARMAS cricket bat with kapil dev sticker on it and this annoyed one of their ring leaders. He hit me hard and I was on ground... he then started scratching and rubbing my forehead very hard and it started to pain. His satanic comments are still fresh in my mind.

" Battah : This place where you put tilak will be scratched by God in same way and you will bigger pain on day of judgement. Better give up putting tilak on your forehead and convert" I was taken aback as till date , I never thought that someone will put me down on my playground amidst my friends and none will object him. Some stood mum and some stood laughing ,... I came back to my maternal place with a bruise and scar in my soul. A void had been created with this incident.

On Sep 14, this void was further deepened when our Urdu teacher Moti Lal ji enetered the class and asked us to assemble in the ground... as I was moving down .. I saw some Muslim boys crowding in different corner and KPs in different one.. Komesh Teng who was our senior was consoling a boy whom I dont know till date that everything will be fine. At the assemble Pyari Madam and Prana Madam broke the news of Tika Lal ji Assasination. Soon a shout erupted from back SHABIR SHAH ZINDABAD... I could realise my Void is a wound now and it is not just a bruise but a radical cut stabbed in my soul.

I moved along with Sandeep bhat to Chinkra Mohalla and saw some JKP guards around the place... LIttle know academy called Minerva and its Muslim boys were also present. a small skirmish resulted with some string iron willed KP kids from ganpatyar and police gaurds lathicharged all. I ran back to home at Banamohalla and by evening a mourning was touched on our roofs.. as if tinned roofs were as sonorous as my void ... In evening I went to Sheetal nath along with some seniors and saw a crowd of some 100 odd Kps maing announcement. I remember Sh Vaishnavi ji making desperate appeal to all for unity and challenging pakistan to kill him in open not like cowards in streets and playgrounds. Next day whole city was reverbrating from Sheetal Nath to karan Nagar. we were stoned during procession at Habbakadal and at tankipora crossing. we chased back and I was happy to send stones back... I bruised my leg in stampede...

In next one year , I saw what was beyond the imagination of human being. I saw dead body in pool floating to be fished but was instead stoned because it was wearing a kadda in right hand , I heard that breastless body of a KP women hanging in my maternal orchard , I heard people getting killed and pissed at , I saw my classmates asking me to recite kalima , I was kicked for carrying a geometry box with Indian Flag , my friends uncle and his family was slaughtered because he had an alteration with milk man , my muslim barber was murdered by his own son and buried in his courtyard for he was talking sensible secular values , temple bells were lowered for Muslims in neighbourhood will get annoyed by its sound , morning prayers on river side temples were no longer mandatory for kids , hearing loud bangs of explosion and curfew sirens was a testimony to the evil apostle that my void had forecasted long back.

In next one year , I saw thosands leaving their home , thousands getting killed on road , mosques rather than calling faithful to prayers instead asking faithful to kill kafirs , neighbours become enemies within days and above all a big exodus.

Twenty years must have been a long time but my void is yet to be filled although scars are gone , I sleep buyt rather than dreams nigthmares still come hauting and chasing me from my civilized world into an unknown barbaric Island.

Musharraf should be tried in India for war crimes

"On February 26, 2000, Ilyas Kashmiri reportedly conducted a guerrilla operation against the Indian Army in Nakyal sector after crossing the LoC with 25 militants. He surrounded a bunker and threw grenades inside. He was able to kidnap an injured Indian officer whose throat he later slit, the report said. Ilyas came back to Pakistan with the head of the Indian officer and presented it to top army officials, including then army chief Gen Musharraf, who gave him a cash award of Rs1 lakh."

This was reported by PTI in a story from Islamabad.

That’s Pervez Musharraf, the darling of Delhi’s media and a trusted friend of India’s politicians of all hues and denominations. The butcher of Kargil has been getting too many audiences in Delhi. Now is the time to look back, salute the martyred soldiers and declare Musharraf India’s war criminal to be tried by an Indian army court. Before Kasab gets a fair justice, Musharraf needs to be brought to the question box, minus media cameras.

A state that can’t take revenge for the butchering of its soldiers and fails to assure the mothers that the life and honour of their children is the first priority of the government, no amount of advertising asking Indian youths join the forces would work. Indians don’t join the Army for the lure of the lucre. For most of our families and us, it’s a tradition and a mark of pride to wear the soldier’s uniform, fight the enemy and live and die for India. It’s the ugly politician who never sends his children to fight for the motherland that compromises and bends backwards for Washington’s money and support. Make him feel ashamed of his spineless overtures and build public pressure to demand Musharraf’s extradition so that his butchering skills can be brought to book. And by us. Our criminal must get our justice.

Ilyas, who slit the throat of our army officer was not killed by Indian government’s action but by US drones.

We depend on Washington for everything. Even the black box of the ill-fated helicopter that killed YSR was sent to the US for examination. We don’t have any sense of shame that even this much can't be done in our labs. So we hope that one day the US will teach Pakistan a lesson, it will see that Pakistan behaves and stops terrorism against India. Why can't our leaders take US passports and join electoral battles for a governorship a la Bobby Jindal and make the Indian soil a little relieved? Something that an average Indian knows that India’s battle has to be fought by India on Indian shoulders and Indian strength, can't be understood by the leaders who are supposedly responsible for protecting the Indian honour and lives.

The National Security Adviser speaks a language of a fearful person and not one who instills confidence and courage into the minds of citizens. The newspapers have reported under the headline "Fear of 26/11 attacks", his exact words like this, "Narayanan said that he lives in daily dread of a repeat of the November 26 Mumbai terror attacks, though he added that now India is better prepared.”

Fear should have been transported to Pakistan and it should have been for the ISI chief to say that he lives in daily dread of an Indian revenge. Pakistan must be made to live in constant fear of India’s justifiable punishment rather than the victim shivering in cold fear of an unrepentant aggressor.

That’s what we have been turned into.

No sense of pride in the soldiers’ bravery and achievements.

No war memorial, not a single memorial worth its name for Kargil’s heroes. Ratherm the government abandoned all celebrations for the Kargil Vijay Divas and has also forgotten to continue with the Bharat Vijay Divas commemorating the 1971 victory resulting in the creation of Bangladesh.

And then the complaint is, we are in the dire need of competent soldiers and officers for our forces. Ha!!

Defence minister A K Antony informed Parliament in July this year that the Indian Army is short of over 11,387 officers, While the Navy was short of 1,512 officers, the shortage in the Air Force was 1,400.

And then what are the measures to attract youths? He said, in a written reply that, "The implementation of the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission, with substantial improvements in the pay structure of officers of the Armed Forces, will go a long way in making the services more attractive."

Does he seriously think that money without honour goes a long way to make a job in the forces more attractive? Does this mindset synchronize with the longstanding traditions and the civilizational moors of a nation where a soldier never dies but is martyred, he is a veer, the brave and having served his motherland goes to the Surya Lok, the highest exalted region of the mighty Sun? Should he be comparing the job of a soldier with that of the babus and the traders and the politicians? It is this attitude that has downgraded respectability for the soldiers’ lives and services.

The officers of the forces were forced to sit on a dharna at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and demand parity with civilian officers, and implementation of "one rank, one pension" principle. Their memorials are ignored, victory days are left uncelebrated, their families run from pillar to post to get their children admitted to good schools, and the entire structure still remains shackled to the ritualism of the pre-Independence British colonialism. Their killers and hate groups are accorded state honours, sent dinner invites and given security at the public expense and then the complaint is, we are not getting enough good stuff for soldiering the nation.

Make soldiering India a matter of honour and respectability. Ensure those who rule India send the best of their children to serve the forces and have guts to take revenge on those who have ill-intentions for our brave.

Surely, bringing Musharraf to Delhi, this time as a war criminal for a trial, will make amends for the past mistakes.

Economy class: Teach etiquette first

I love it. Politicians must travel economy class at least once in their lifetime to understand how Indians below the poverty line live. They can have their birthday bashes in London and Maldives but for the sake of setting an example and having fun in a time when the opposition is simply absent, it's a good game. Collect 500 people to wave at you standing at the gates of a sleeper class compartment for a three-hour journey. For the rest of the part a Mitsubishi Pajero would be waiting with glasses of lassi and nimbu paani. It also gives a different kind of publicity in the media plus posters in the home constituency. After Gandhi, another one. Simple living, high flying and a down to earth approach to get media attention.
The credibility of an average politician, right from the gym-obsessed Sheraton and Taj guests to the statue gazers in Lucknow has gone so low that even if the austerity drive of the neo-Gandhians was a sincere effort to bring down unreasonable expenses, no one believes it is more than a brief fun time intervention for media attention so that while everybody would have been talking about the BJP's recent victories, make chatteratti talk Gandhi, the Sonia and Rahul way. They spend ostentatiously, live luxuriously, show off their wealth in the most stinking way and then garland Gandhi for the happiness of the minions and ordinary mortals.
That's OK if they get a sweet little chance to do that. But what about the ugly bad image of those who represent us in Parliament and assemblies? Isn't it more important than the run-of-the-mill drives that, at best look naïve and shallow? My friends have been calling me to underline through my columns that for God's sake let the politicians travel separately and not barge into the small, unclean and low-level compartments of the common people. They come with hordes of their unhygienic paan chewing swaggers and insensitive black cats and khaki gunmen, occupy the legitimately reserved berths of the passengers and talk nonsensically till late hours in the night putting all the fellow passengers to great discomfort. They get flights delayed and throw tantrums on board. They don't have civilized manners to use toilets and leave washbasins choked. They travel either without ticket or their journeys are paid by us taxpayers which they misuse to the core and fiddle with the law although they are also known as lawmakers.
You too might have had your tales to share. I have two. A month ago I was invited by a literary society to a Lucknow programme. It was fine till I reached my rail compartment, I saw a neta-type person occupying my berth. He felt nothing till I asked: "Bhaisaheb, aapka seat number kya hai (Sir, what's your berth number)? He didn't even look at me and one of his companions, asked: "Aap doosre dibbe mein seat le lelnge kya (Will you take another berth in a different compartment)? I refused and willy-nilly they let me sit on my berth, and it was already 11.30pm. The moment the train left the station they started a conversation that was noisy and filthy followed by opening the corks and having a chicken biryani meal. At 1am, I had to go to a railway officer to complain but he pleaded helplessness. They are all, four, MLAs, sir, I can't do anything. Now it's another matter I changed my berth and reached the destination somehow but they could have been any party's MLAs.
No party can say that it doesn't have its share of ruffians. The other incident occurred at Ghaziabad station where again in a train at 10.30pm a netaji boarded with his guards and kept the entire compartment on tenterhooks till one on one pretext or the other like change the pillows, give berths to his chamchas and then again big laughter's and cracking of jokes without bothering there are other passengers too wanting to have a sleep. Ladies fear them children are not advised to emulate them, people don't trust and movies depict them as evil-incarnate. So what's the point in having an austerity drive among them till the ugly-neta image is also corrected?

That's the scenario depicting the rulers in a country which is facing Red terror, Green terror and all colours of intolerances eating away the vitals of our democratic institutions and lowering public morale. No one takes a stand on the illegal infiltrations from Bangladesh, China's continuous incursions and Pakistan's belligerence on homegrown murderers called jihadis. The value of the rupee is dwindling and cost of living rising proportionately. But the netas keep on increasing their salaries, perks and nastiness without a check. There are a few exceptions like Mamata Banerjee but they remain only honourable exceptions. I am sure if Rahul wills, he can effect a change. The reports emerging from his camp do tell a tale which is different and refreshing. He is enjoying an unenviable position and attracts an audience that can be turned into agents of change.
So, dear Rahul, before you really get cracking on the austerity front, please see there is some action for parliamentarians and MLAs teaching them social behavior. Till then, the drama to further erode a space for common people can wait.

डेढ़ वर्ष पूर्व एक हिंदू युवती रेवती मसूसाई को शरीयत अदालत ने जबरन उसकी बेटी और पति से अलग कर मजहबी सुधार-शिविर में भेज दिया था, क्योंकि रेवती को इस्लामी कानून भंग करने का दोषी पाया गया। वहा किसी भी मुस्लिम को अपना मजहब बदल कर शादी करने पर कानूनी पाबंदी है। अधिकृत तौर पर इस्लामी राज्य मलेशिया पर जैसे-जैसे मध्य-पूर्व और अरब के धन का प्रभाव बढ़ता गया वैसे-वैसे वहा गैर मुस्लिमों के प्रति असहिष्णुता भी बढ़ी है। वहा की गठबंधन सरकार नेशनल फ्रंट में उमनो का वर्चस्व है, जिसमें केवल मुस्लिम ही शामिल हैं। अपने प्रभाव को और बढ़ाने के लिए वह ज्यादा से ज्यादा इस्लामी कट्टरवाद को शासकीय संरक्षण देने की नीति पर चल रहा है। अभी मलेशिया की सुप्रसिद्ध मुस्लिम माडल कर्तिका सारी देवी सुकर्णो को बीयर पीने के जुर्म में सार्वजनिक तौर पर बेंतों से पीटने की सजा सुनाई गई। इस पर सारी दुनिया में हंगामा हो गया तो फिलहाल सजा निलंबित कर दी गई है। उस पर 5000 रिंगलिट का जुर्माना भी किया गया। फिर उसे जेल ले गए, पर वकीलों और महिला अधिकार संगठनों द्वारा शोर मचाने पर घर छोड़ गए। अब मलेशिया सरकार ने सांकेतिक सजा देने की बात कही है।

पूरे विश्व में यदि कोई ऐसा इस्लामी या मुस्लिम बहुल देश ढूंढने निकले, जहा अल्पसंख्यक गैर मुस्लिमों के साथ सामान्य, एक समान और सम्मानजनक कानूनी व्यवहार किया जाता है तो शायद ऐसा एक भी देश ढूंढने में मुश्किल होगी। हो सकता है तुर्की का उदाहरण दिया जाए, पर उसके बारे में कहा जाएगा कि वह यूरोपीय प्रभाव वाला 'गैर इस्लामी' मुस्लिम बहुल देश है। यह परिदृश्य दक्षिण एशिया और पूर्वी एशिया में हिंदू समाज के धार्मिक अधिकारों पर लगातार बढ़ रहे आघातों का एक दु:खद पहलू उजागर करता है। पाकिस्तान और बांग्लादेश में तो हिंदुओं की आवाज भी उठने की गुंजाइश नहीं बची है। नेपाल दुनिया का एकमात्र संवैधानिक हिंदू राष्ट्र था। उसकी वह स्थिति भी समाप्त कर दी गई और हिंदू-हनन को सेकुलर-विजयोत्सव बना दिया गया। मलेशिया और इंडोनेशिया जैसे मुस्लिम बहुल देश, जिनके बारे में कहा जाता था कि वहां का मुस्लिम समाज पढ़ा-लिखा, समृद्ध और आधुनिक है अत: गैर मुस्लिमों के मानवाधिकारों के प्रति सम्यक दृष्टि रखेगा, क्योंकि इन सुशिक्षित मुसलमानों के अनुसार इस्लाम सबके प्रति शांति और भाईचारा सिखाता है, वहा भी हिंदुओं के सामान्य नागरिक एवं धार्मिक अधिकार कुचले जा रहे हैं।

यह विचित्र है कि भारत चुप है। यहा के हिंदू चुप हैं, क्योंकि दुनिया में कहीं भी हिंदुओं के मानवाधिकारों के लिए आवाज उठाना सेकुलरवाद के खिलाफ है। यहा के वे राजनेता जो कभी तथाकथित तौर पर हिंदू हितों की राजनीति के बल पर अपार सत्ता और ऐश्वर्य का लाभ प्राप्त करते रहे, कहीं भी, कभी भी हिंदू मानवाधिकारों पर बोलते हुए इतना शरमा-शरमा कर भीगे जाते हैं, मानो कोई गलत काम करते पकड़े गए हों। आजकल तो वैसे भी वे आपसी अधिकारों के लिए संघर्षरत हैं। मलेशिया में बेचारे हिंदुओं के दर्द पर बोलने के लिए यहां फुर्सत किसे है? राजनेताओं द्वारा भारत में हिंदुत्व के प्रति छल ने हिंदू समाज के एकत्व और बल को तो क्षीण किया ही है, विश्व भर में हिंदुओं के मनोबल पर भी उसका गंभीर असर पड़ा है। कुछ समय पहले मैं बांग्लादेश की यात्रा पर गया था। वहा के हिंदू नेताओं ने बताया कि बांग्लादेश में हिंदू मानवाधिकारों के हनन पर वहा स्थित अमेरिकी राजदूत आवाज उठाते हैं, पर भारतीय उच्चायोग कभी कुछ नहीं बोलता। पाकिस्तान में ईसाइयों पर तनिक आघात होते ही अमेरिका और यूरोप के राजदूत इस्लामाबाद दौड़े जाते हैं और बड़ी पत्र-पत्रिकाओं में समाचार और खोजी-फीचर छापकर उनके अधिकारों की रक्षा की जाती है, लेकिन केवल भारत ही ऐसा एकमात्र देश है जहा के बहुसंख्यक हिंदू समाज पर आघात न स्वदेश के समाचार पत्रों में स्थान पाते हैं और न ही शासन या अन्य राजनीतिक दल उस संदर्भ में विचलित होते हैं। ऐसी स्थिति में हिंदू समाज केवल गैर राजनीतिक हिंदू संगठन में ही आशा की किरण खोज सकता है।

राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ के सरसंघचालक मोहन भागवत ने इस संदर्भ में असंदिग्ध हिंदू एकता पर बल देते हुए गैर राजनीतिक सागठनिक कायरें के विस्तार पर काफी जोर दिया है, जिसे अपने हिंदू धर्म के प्रति संकोच या लज्जाबोध हो या जो राजनीतिक लाभ-अलाभ के तराजू पर हिंदू हितों के संबंध में आवाज उठाने या न उठाने का फैसला करे, उन तत्वों से कोई उम्मीद नहीं की जा सकती। विश्व में बहुलतावाद, लोकतंत्र, अन्य मत के प्रति सम्मान और समान नागरिक अधिकारों की रक्षा के लिए हिंदू जीवन मूल्यों की रक्षा ही एकमात्र उपाय है।

‘Jinnah is out to destroy the very soul of India’ Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee
Pranab Mukherjee has said that Syama Prasad Mookerjee supported Partition. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is the Nehruvian trait of blaming the patriot and yielding to the separatists that he showed once again, to score a false point.

Here is the factsheet:

First they bullied, threatened and declared they don’t care for ethics, and that they have pistols to use. They invoked Allah to incite murderous passions. It was followed by massacres so unparalleled that Syama Prasad Mookerjee, first elected to Bengal legislature on a Congress ticket, wrote, “What happened in Calcutta is perhaps without a parallel in modern history. St. Bartholomew’s Day, of which history records some grim events of murder and butchery, pales into insignificance compared to the brutalities that were committed in the streets, lanes and bylanes of this first city of British India.”

Those for whom India’s unity and integrity had remained an article of faith were shaken by the sheer ferocity of the Muslim League’s open call to violence under the leadership of Jinnah. After the ‘Direct Action’ resolution was passed by the Muslim League on July 19, 1946, its president, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, said in his valedictory speech: “This day we bid goodbye to constitutional methods... Now the time has come for the Muslim Nation to resort to direct action. I am not prepared to discuss ethics. We have a pistol and are in a position to use it.”

After the ‘direct action’ in Kolkata, during a debate on the no confidence motion in Bengal assembly, Dr. Mookerjee said (excerpts from assembly proceedings):

“When Mr. Jinnah was confronted at a press conference in Bombay on 31st July and was asked whether direct action meant violence or non-violence, his cryptic reply was ‘I am not going to discuss ethics’. (The Hon. Mr. Mohammed Ali : Good.). But Khwaja Nazimuddin was not so good. He came out very bluntly in Bengal and said that Muslims did not believe in non-violence at all. Now Sir, speeches like these were made by responsible League leaders . . . All this was followed by a series of articles and statements, which appeared in the columns of newspapers — the Morning News, the Star of India and the Azad. If . . . my friend Mr. Ispahani . . . . reads these documents . . . he will be able to find out that there was nothing but open and direct incitement to violence. Hatred of Hindus and jehad on the Hindus was declared was declared in fire-eating language . . . and the general Moslem public have acted according to the instructions . . .. It is therefore vitally necessary that this false and foolish idea of Pakistan or Islamic rule has to be banished for ever from your head. In Bengal we have got to live together.”

That was 1946, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee. And that was Syama Prasad Mookerjee speaking. Pranabda’s half lies have tried to malign a patriot who remains a symbol of India’s unity.
It is amazing how a distinguished politician like Pranab Mukherjee can go so wrong on a great stalwart of India’s unity, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, who lived for India’s unity and died mysteriously in Srinagar jail.

Syama Prasad was an ardent devotee of Sri Aurobindo and hence had unflinching faith in the necessity of a united India. He said, “the dangers in front of us are many; the latest addition in the shape of a movement for Pakistan should not be lightly brushed aside. This preposterous claim must be nipped in the bud by all lovers of Hindusthan.”(Sylhet, 7th April 1940).

So the dream was always a United India and not a truncated one. He begged all to help realise it. But Muslim belligerence was continuously rising. He wrote, ‘In provinces where constitutional powers have passed to the hands of Moslem ministers, reports of oppression and injustices daily pour in. I myself can bear testimony to a systemic policy pursued by the Ministry now in power in Bengal which is aimed at crippling the Hindus in every sphere of life-economic, political and cultural.” (Ibid).

The Congress remained a silent spectator to Hindu plight. Mookerjee wrote, “Much though we wish that the truth was otherwise, it is no use concealing the fact that the Congress has not succeeded in bringing within its fold any very large number of Moslems. And yet the Congress dare not openly fight for the protection of Hindu interests even though they are deliberately trampled underfoot.”(Ibid).

As a reiteration of his stand he declared, “as Hindus our position is perfectly clear. We want communal harmony and amity. We fully recognise that this country must continue in future, as it has been in the past, the home of many people other than Hindus. We beg of them to treat this country as their fatherland and identify themselves with the joys and sorrows of the people of India.”(Ibid).

He remained hopeful till the last — “We shall rise, we shall unite. We shall live in a country whose destinies shall be in the hands of her children alone and where the flag of a free and United Hindusthan shall proclaim for ever the glory of peace and progress, of tolerance and freedom.” (North Bihar Provincial Hindu Conference,14 th April 1940).

He knew of the British hand behind the demand for Pakistan and said,”The British government is reluctant to transfer power to Indians for it apprehends that the Hindus constituting 70 per cent of the Indian population would then have the dominant voice, which leading Moslems would not be prepared to accept. It is open to government to institute national electorates and leave administration in the provinces and at the centre to be run by majority parties who will be returned through such electorates with a mandate for giving effect to political programmes that transcend the bounds of sectarian interest. It will not do that for it knows that the acceptance of joint electorates will ultimately reduce communal misunderstandings, lead to national solidarity and may sound the death knell of British supremacy in India....”(ibid).

He didn’t approve of Gandhi’s Muslim appeasement policy and said “Gandhiji committed a fresh Himalayan blunder by trying to placate Jinnah.”(30th Sept. 1944). He warned Gandhi and Congress again and again against appeasing Jinnah. In fact, to keep Jinnah’s divisive politics at bay he supported Fazlul Haque in 1939. He warned C. Rajagopalachari that Jinnah keeps changing his stand and even if his Partition proposal is accepted, he will demand district-wise plebiscite.(Bharat Kesari: Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee with Modern Implications by S. In Ludhiana he declared, “There can be no compromise with any fantastic claim for cutting India to pieces, either on communal or on provincial considerations. India has been and is one country and must remain so, whatever self-constituted exponents of so-called Hindu Moslem unity may declare. It is a most dangerous pastime to try to placate that section of Moslems who think it beneath their dignity to live in India as such and therefore demand a territory of their own, sovereign and independent, carved out of our motherland, a territory where crores of Hindus will continue to live bereft of their Indian nationality. It is nothing short of stabbing Indian liberty and nationalism in the back...I sincerely hope that in the period of struggle that lies ahead of us Hindus, Moslems, Christians, Buddhists and all others will merge themselves wholeheartedly in the cause of Indian emancipation and thereby baffle the machinations of those reactionary elements that create disunity or dissension among ourselves or seek to thrive on them.”(November 12 1944, Ludhiana).

Lastly, the Congress surrender to Jinnah left the nationalists no choice, and Mookerjee supported the partition of Bengal in 1946 as a fait accompli only to prevent the inclusion of its Hindu-majority areas in a Muslim-dominated East Pakistan (“If 25 per cent Muslims could not agree to live in India, how could 44 per cent of Hindus live in Bengal under 54 per cent Muslims?”). He also opposed a failed bid for a united but independent Bengal made in 1947 by Sarat Bose, the brother of Subhas Chandra Bose and Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, a Bengali Muslim politician.

The massacres of Hindus shook everyone, and Hindu leaders couldn’t find a solution, but to accept division. Syama Prasad said,”Today we stand disillusioned. As Hindus we have been prepared to make sacrifices and forego many of our rightful interests in furtherance of a possible unity with the Moslems of India for the attainment of our goal (freedom for united India). Our anxiety to obtain their support has been often misunderstood for weakness and helplessness... Not only do the Hindus and the Moslems stand divided but among the Hindus artificial barriers have been imposed and our dream of a United Indian nation is receding to the background.”(Awake Hindusthan).

He never supported the vicious idea of Partition, but was helpless when the Congress surrendered to Muslim separatism. Like millions of unyielding Indians.

Grammar of good life

The feel of goodness often comes unannounced. This time it happened to me in the form of our dear Doctor's humble speech while he was giving away the Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavna Award to an unassuming Vaishnav of Paunar, Gautam Bhai. Manmohan Singh's words, to change our lifestyles and take a lesson from our villages were like a fresh breeze. His exact words, "We should question whether our current lifestyles and value systems are sustainable if we are to live in harmony with nature and at peace with ourselves."

Our lifestyle, complete urbanization and gobbling the natural resources, has resulted in catastrophes for the earth.

Like what? Small things perhaps matter most. In 1968, my sister's village in Haryana had enough water at 85 feet below surface and just a three horsepower motor was sufficient to get full throttles of water through a three-inch pipe. Today the same place gets less water after digging 460 feet. That too, using a 15 horsepower motor.

In Silvasa, the former Portuguese colony with a 73% tribal population, the main river Pipariya's water has gone muddy red and completely unusable for any purpose because the government introduced a policy of industrialization ostensibly to "help" tribal people and give a fillip to their modernization. The result is, tribal population is fast dwindling, their land is vanishing from their hands, they are losing touch with their culture and language, incidents of thefts, rapes and murders have increased manifold, their leadership has gone nauseatingly corrupt under the influence of Delhi's parliamentary "friends" and Silvasa , once known for its rustic tribal beauty and natural splendour has turned into a "daru-dance-party" destination for Mumbaikars.

We have learnt the art of destroying our nature and culture under the somber guidelines of an alienated Planning Commission and an attitude that defines everything under the head of progress as westernization. Cut the jungles to make roads, build big dams and don't care about the devastated people and their rehabilitation, convert agricultural land into non-agricultural and build farmhouses and multiplexes, concrete jungles for maddeningly Americanized crowds which run crazy after advertisements promising acres of green in the middle of city.

This life doesn't give you time for the kids but ample space for business trips and nine-to-nine work schedules. The kids get drunk, are hooked on drugs, drive fast and kill poor people sleeping on the footpath that makes the urban successful father to spend millions to ensure he is not put to the gallows. Rajesh Kalra wrote in his blog how Punjab is losing water. It's not just the loss of water, the fast-track lifestyle has led Punjab and Haryana, once known for its "gabru mundas" (strong young lads) into the dark alleys of drugs and alcoholism. It has a devastating effect on the height and strength of the Punjabi youth whose martial prowess has always been a subject of folklore. But who cares? Manmohan Singh or Badal or his ever yielding partner?

Now, Gautam Bhai leads a different kind of life that made Manmohan Singh say something different and off track.

People like them represent the real core of our civilizational mooring which has taught us to have a symbiotic relationship with nature. "Earn, only to give" is Vedanta's message. Significance of Upanishadic messages like live to fulfil needs and control your desires is as simple as that. Dharma is righteousness and that must drive our desires and wealth. No individual can survive in isolation and a part of the society is an inseparable constituent of the whole hence what he takes from the society requires an obligation to return the favours. To understand the real meaning behind it Manmohan Singh or any other person interested in an alternative path, must read at least these two books, Gandhi's "Hind Swarajya" and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya's "Integral Humanism" to understand a lifestyle that would sustain the earth.

Gautam Bhai's Paunar is a place near Yavatmal, where the eternally famous ashram of Vinoba Bhave is situated on the banks of the river Dham. The ashram is better known for its Bhudan Yajna or the people's movement to give land to the landless, initiated by the great Gandhian Vinoba Bhave, whose treatise on Srimad Bhagwad Gita in Marathi is a household treasure named Gitai or the Mother Gita. His other masterpiece is on the Quran, as he was well versed in Arabic too.

Sometime ago, I was in Yavatmal for an RSS programme and when my friends Sudhir Pathak and Srinivas Vaidya, who accompanied me, told me that the Paunar Ashram was midway, I risked a delay for my scheduled programme and decided to make a stopover.

It was worth it. The ashram is like poetry in nature's lap. Vinoba represents the best in Hindu mind. Sauve, gentle, all encompassing and an epitome of total dedication to the Brahma, the creator. He might have been a misfit for the present politically charged society; yet he made his mark on the times he traversed with unflinching faith in reforming society through "bhakti". His ashram bears the name Jai Jagat, salutation to the world. The room where he breathed his last has his samadhi now and the only two words inscribed on the marble structure are Shri Hari, the name of Vishnu. A couple of years before he bid adieu to this mortal world he had stopped signing his name and instead would write Shri Hari, signifying that all is merged in one supreme identity of the Lord, everything belongs to Him, hence what's the use of having a name for the mortal body?

Gautam Bhai who knew me through my articles welcomed and took us around the ashram. It's more like a Vedic seer's hermitage than a social reformer's work station. Gautam Bhai personifies the Vinoba spirit. He hails from the highly motivated family of Bajajs, who were ardent Gandhi devotees, most famous being the father and son-duo Jamna Lal Bajaj and Kamal Nayan Bajaj. Did the Bhudan movement succeed? Yes and no, but it definitely kindled a spirit of sacrifice among the wealthier Hindus. One of them, Ashok Ruikar, whose father Nagoraoji Ramchandra Ruikar donated 600 acres of land to Vinoba's Bhudan was my host and he said: "Vinoba inspired our family though we had always been close to the RSS. Vinoba once wrote that he was a non-member member of the RSS, meaning though not active in the organization he finds an affinity with it."

This is a glimpse of the Bharat we hardly know about in our India. Someone inspired with the spirit of giving, feeling the pains of others and having a lifestyle which is synchronized with nature. The people in our villages have done much more for the nation, yet their concerns, worldview and lifestyle hardly find any echo either in our media or in the academia.

What's there if there are no air, water and earth? Clubs and politics and glamour? The grammar of good and sustainable life comes through self-control and respect for nature and not through the policies of the "whiskey drinkers" of Delhi. Those who take immense pleasure to wear fur coats and relish the meat of those poor animals who were brutalized before getting finally slaughtered must reap the results of their inhuman barbarism.

Subhash Sharma, a farmer in the drought-hit Yavatmal area and Devaji Tofa, a rebel rural worker who disapproves the interference of any state apparatus in his village to live happier, are two such examples that sustain the earth.

I met Subhash Sharma recently when every newspaper was writing about farmers' suicides and parched farmlands in Vidarbha. He says: "We have lost the respect for Mother Earth, hence gets cursed." His is the only island of hope and happiness with green acres spread with no harvest loss even when the region is reeling under severe a drought. The reason? A new indigenous technique of water conservation and recognizing that beyond limit humans do not need much to store. Hence his first harvest is for the ants and insects that people his land. He always allows the "moong" crop to be "wasted" so that earthworms, ants and millions of other life forms which thrive on "moong" can have a full meal.

He has dug hundreds of staggered pits along the boundaries of his farmland that work as water reservoirs for crops. That's the main "secret" of never having his land parched even in a bad season. He has about 50 farm labourers working on his land and every year after Baisakhi, he takes them along with their children for a pilgrimage. This year the count was 80, including all family members of the labourers. All at his own cost. Last year they went to Mata Vaishno Devi. This year was the turn of Dwarka and Somnath.

That's Bharat. And that's a lifestyle perhaps Manmohan Singh was thinking of when he awarded Gautam Bhai.

And now a few words about Devaji Bhai Tofa.

I was fortunate enough to hand over the coveted Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Award to him, though frankly I felt too small and dwarved listening to his achievements and seeing his humility.

He is working against the government.

He believes wherever the government has interfered the people have been belittled.

And he makes sense.

He showed it in his area of influence.

He works in the Naxal-infested area of Gadhchiroli, in a Gond village Mendha-Lekha, in Dhanora Tehsil of Maharashtra. He asks: "You people say that in our villages, it is our government. Then whose governments are the ones in Delhi and Bombay?" The workers had no answer and the old man then told them, "The governments in Delhi and Bombay are ours because we elect them. But in our villages, we do not have a government. We are the government."

Most of the development work in his village has been undertaken and executed by Gond tribals.

And their happiness index has increased.

Is this the lifestyle Manmohan Singh tried to support. Really?
