PRESS NOTE
BJP welcomes Supreme Court taking cognizance of Amarnath Yatris -
J&K Government's apathy to Amarnath Yatris condemnable.
Statement of Shri Tarun Vijay Member of Parliament and
National spokesperson, BJP
16th July, 2012 - New Delhi.  We welcome Supreme Court taking suo moto cognizance of reports regarding the deaths of Amarnath Yatra Pilgrims and issuing notices to the Union Home Ministry, Health Ministry, J&K Government and Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) regarding the extra ordinary high number of pilgrims' deaths this year and lack of basic facilities for yatris.

The apathy and insensitive attitude of J&K Government and SASB headed by Governor Shri Vohra is quite evident.  They have chosen to not to see the plight of the Hindu Pilgrims and not give any hearens to the appeals of the hapless pilgrims who are braving natural and state - made difficulties on the route to Amarnath shrine.  The harrowing tales of the pilgrims describing lack of facilities and chaotic situation prevailing on the route to Shri Amarnathji are raising doubts whether J&K Government is interested in having this pilgrimage continued.  One of the oldest and highest revered pilgrimages for the Hindus globally is facing insensitive and callous attitude by those who were responsible to help it occur smoothly.  The silence of Union Home ministry is in this regard is also in deafening.  We demand Shri Chidambaram should immediately go  to Srinagar to hold a review meeting with CM and Governor regarding facilities for the yatris and take immediate decisions to provide adequate health and shelter facilities to the yatris.

The stony silence of J&K Government on why it has failed to build permanent shelters for the Amarnath yatris as it had promised to the people during famous Amarnath agitation in 2008 also needs to be explained by Union Government. Are Hindus who had already been forced - exile from the valley, now being tortured to abandon their pilgrimage to Amarnath also?
